Goodhood insight – SATTA

With SATTA recently releasing the Summer Solstice Collection for this summer, stockists Goodhood pay a visit to the Brixton based studio/workshop/home of the brands founder and creative director Joe Lauder. They take a tour of the space and also sit down with Joe to find out a bit more about the brand itself. Here’s what he had to say…

How did Satta start?

I guess the seeds for Satta were planted in 2007 where I spent my first retreat in the Peruvian amazon staying with a shaman learning about the plant medicines of the jungle. I’d just left school and had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and left with a deep love for the natural world. I knew whatever I did I wanted to be working with nature in whatever way possible, and spent the next few summers designing and building gardens around London as Studio Satta. Because of the seasonal nature of landscaping, the winters were really quiet so I often travelled through the winter months. The seeds for Satta in its current incarnation were sown whilst away on a yoga retreat I took through India and Indonesia in 2012.

I see the process of designing not separate from my yoga practice. Yoga in Sanskrit comes from the root verb Yuj, meaning union or, to join. Satta is a union, a bringing together, of all the aspects of my life, both the people, environments and cultures I experience and my personal passions for working with plants and natural materials, skateboarding and surfing, the output being my efforts to try to merge them together into a tangible and cohesive story, which I hope people can resonate with.

How did you get into design and more specifically producing hand made objects?

So starting off as a landscaper and garden designer I often got asked to produce bespoke outdoor furniture pieces for my clients, over time I developed a love for working with wood and decided to further my skills by studying a fine furniture making course. Once I’d learnt what I wanted to know I left the course and started slowly getting a workshop together in my studio.

What are the key reference points for the brand?

Roots music, Zen buddhism, the trees, the moon, the stars, the seas, rastafarian livity, strictly roots and culture.

Anything inparticular that is heavily influencing you right at this moment?

I’ve been learning about gaia psychology and its opening up a lot of stuff for me at the moment. At its heart it’s about finding ways to re-ignite the emotional connection between individuals and the natural world, in order to help develop sustainable lifestyles and to help support the feelings of separateness from nature. I can only hope that the story Satta tells points in the same direction, because for me that is what its all about, reconnecting.

How do you handle the delicate balance between utilizing nature and living in the city?

Working as a landscaper the balance was easily met, working with the land and constantly finding solutions for people in the city to best utilise their own personal plots of nature. I miss the groundedness which came from landscaping but it only feeds my hunger to integrate the natural world into as many aspects of the design process as possible, be it from the colour palettes, illustrations and graphics to the actual working with natural materials in the workshop.

What does living in London mean to you?

London is so intense, its a struggle to hold your space; for me living in London is about constantly finding balance. London is wild.

What are you listening to at Satta HQ at the moment?

Barrington Levy – Send a Moses

What does the future hold for Satta?

Only Jah know!

KR3W x Niagara Preview

For this Autumn/Winter, skateboarding apparel specialists KR3W link up with artist and musician Niagara to produce a limited range of tees and sweaters.

Having founded, fronted and been a part of several bands in her time, Niagara utilised her art school experience to produce album art and promotional materials for her bands Destroy All Monsters / Dark Carnival. Through this she found her style, combining illustration with collages and pop iconography, a style which she carried through to the 90’s as she began to host small exhibitions and cafe shows in the Detroit area. Soon to follow were high profile exhibits around the world and the title of “The Queen of Detroit” was given to her by many art periodicals. Her standout piece, ‘The Niagara Girl’ represents a certain feminist swagger with her drop dead gorgeous looks and an equally dangerous demeanour.

Check out product images from the first of many unique collaborations from KR3W above and below, which highlights a selection of graphic tees and hooded sweaters from the KR3W X Niagara collection. For more information on KR3W be sure to visit kr3wdenim.com

OWL Skateboards – Interview

owl_02Coinciding with this year’s international go skateboarding day on the 21st of June we had the pleasure of witnessing the release of OWL skateboards’ latest run of graphics, the ‘Parliament’ series. Alongside this came their first promo video featuring a recognisable variety of household spots from our very own Brighton. We sat down for a chat with Al Hodgson, a key member of the team at OWL to tell us a little more about the new company and it’s direction.

Hi Al how’re you doing? Owl describes itself as a ‘creative collective’. Could you tell us more about the ethos and origins of the company?

Hey man, I’m doing great thanks, enjoying the sunny weather for a change…Basically, OWL was started by Stefan Darque, a good Bristol-based friend of mine, as an alternative approach to supporting artists through skateboarding and vice versa. OWL’s aim is to act like a skateboard based, art printing company; treating boards as artist’s ‘prints’ and giving them a cut of every board sold as opposed to a flat payment for a graphic series. Consequently, a strong focus is put on the artist and other creative endeavours, moving away from a more conventional ‘team rider’ approach. We’ve still got skateboarders involved in the company and riding the boards, but they are more part of the collective; representing us and contributing to the creative direction of the company as a whole.

We’re not the only ones who seem to love the new ‘Parliament’ series graphics. How did your collaboration with the artist Mike Nicholson come about?

‘Rough’ Mike has been a good friend of mine for the past few years now through skating in Brighton. He’s done a bunch of artwork in the past collaborating with board companies; doing a lot of the early Heroin graphics as well as a bunch of other projects, so he’s no stranger to it. His work’s intricate and rad and it really fit the aesthetics we were aiming for, so he was just the natural choice for this series. I fully recommend people check his stuff out, he’s the man.

The illustrations themselves are great, did you have that direction in mind beforehand or was there input from everybody?

Well there was a fair amount of discussion between Stefan and I from the start about the graphic direction to take the first run and what was decided on took a while to refine. But the inspiration basically came from aged reference books and ornithological encyclopaedias from the early and mid 20th century; with the intricate black and white drawings you would often have beside passages of text or information about a particular species. It’s a dated style of drawing you just don’t really see anymore and so we thought incorporating that into board graphics would look rad. We ended up buying a bunch of old books for aesthetic reference and once we’d decided on a structure for the graphics, we approached Mike to see what his take on the idea would be.

☽ NOCTURNIS ☾ from Owl Skateboards on Vimeo.

The promo video ‘Nocturnis’ as well as all the photos we’ve seen so far are shot at night. How does that tie in with the theme of the company?

A big part of OWL’s aesthetic is that all our visual content will be at night to adhere to the majoritively nocturnal nature of owls themselves. Owls hunt for prey under cover of darkness and in a similar respect we ‘hunt’ amongst architecture. I’ve always been inspired by groups like the Minuit movement and had an affinity to the alternate vibe created by nocturnal side of skateboarding, so Stefan and I felt that would be an apt approach to take the visual element of OWL.

owl_07

What’s the next step for OWL? Are we going to see any collaboration with new artists in the near future?

As of now we’re just pushing this series and getting OWL a little more recognised, and we’ve had a bunch of support from all sorts of cool places, which we’re super grateful for.

In terms of the future though, we’ll be working on a bunch of new video projects in the coming months and we’ve already started work on our next run which we’re really excited about. We’ll be collaborating with a new artist and working with a very different style, but as of now it’s all still undisclosed…

Don’t forget to check out OWL skateboards on Facebook and Instagram for more information on where to grab one of these rapidly selling boards. We’re looking forward to seeing them launch into what we foresee to be a bright future as a fresh face in the ever-growing industry that is skateboarding.

IMG_2413-2

We have been eagerly anticipating this release since we first caught wind of it, with those earthy tones a firm summer favourite here at bythelevel. Brixton based SATTA are proud to present their solstice collection for summer 2014.

Rooted in Rastafarian culture and inspired by the simplicity and rawness of skateboardings beginnings, SATTA tells the story of livity which embodies a connectedness, balance and harmony with nature and all of creation. Since making its debut with handcrafted cruiser decks sculpted from salvaged offcuts, the ‘sidewalk surfer’ boards have put SATTA on the map as one of the highest quality skateboards available.

This summer sees SATTA develop their range into a collection of seasonal staples including tees, hoods and accessories to sit alongside their custom boards. The clothing is made from 100% organic cotton, taking cues and colour inspiration from the natural world.

SATTA’s founder Joe had this to say on the collection;

Being mindful that the vibe and lifestyle of Satta resonate beyond just skateboarding, we have launched our first clothing collection as a means to spread the Satta Livity.”
