Sage Elsesser Interview

Sage Elsesser – Interview

In July we had the pleasure of meeting some of the most renowned riders in the world during the London stop of Converse’s ‘One Star’ world tour. Not only did we see some mind-blowing skateboarding but also had the opportunity to have a chat with one of the most talked about young faces in skateboarding today, Sage Elsesser. When you’re one of the kids at the forefront Supreme’s ‘cherry’, there’s no doubt that you’re going to amass quite a fan base around the world. On the flipside of things, ‘cherry’ has had its fair share of scrutiny since its release and it was clear from the get-go that Sage had a pretty hard exterior. Nonetheless, after getting down to talking we had a great conversation with him and his friend Elliot that we’re happy to finally share. This is the Sage Elsesser interview.

Sage Elsesser Interview

There’s a lot of footage of you skating in NYC. How does skating in London compare?

Yeah I think it’s sick. I like the Palace shit, it’s real cool.

You and Sean [Pablo] seem pretty tight. Is he your go-to guy on trips like this?

[Laughs] No homo but yeah we sleep in the same bed.

As one of the most familiar faces in ‘cherry’ you’ve no doubt noticed all the kids playing dress-up. What do you think about all that?

It’s like a cool form of flattery. It’s sick but it’s cool to do your own shit… But then again imitating people – it’s what you’re supposed to do with the people you look up to. I dressed up like Dill you know what I mean? It’s kind of crazy though when they don’t know how to kickflip. I went to Southbank and saw like ten kids just all posted; FA, Supreme all that shit.. They were all just doing bonelesses on the bank but couldn’t really skate. I dunno, you’ve gotta learn the basics first. Don’t start no complying all over the place.

How about all the people biting it that don’t skate at all? You think the video has had anything to do with skateboarding being as popular as it is right now?

Yeah I think as far as Supreme’s concerned people just fuck with us because we make it look sick I guess; at least opposed to hypebeast kids wearing leather pants and shit. It shows a different side of it.

Sage Elsesser Interview

What’s it like riding for a big company like Converse?

It’s sick but at the same time it’s pretty hectic.

Yeah, it’s pretty crazy they’re flying you around the world for the sake of a shoe.

I guess you’ve got to understand the business side of it. They’re just doing what they’ve got to do.

What would your go-to shoe usually be?

I’d probably be wearing Chuck Taylors or something like that.

Do all the kids biting the ‘cherry’ thing ever make you think twice before putting on a pair?

Yes. I’ve definitely thought, “damn I’ve gotta think of a new shoe to skate”, but then again it doesn’t matter… I wear chucks because my friend Logan wore Chuck Taylors back in the day. This dude Logan started everything that you see now: Rails, colours, Dickies pants – he did all that first. Nobody was fuckin’ with that, then the whole grip tape art thing came about… it was all one dude.

If you look at old footage you’ll see Steve Cab back in the day, everybody wore them. It’s a classic shoe.

Do you ever feel those eyes on you? Like “here’s another dude in Chucks and Dickies skating around”.

Yeah it’s crazy. The thing I hate most is people thinking I’m white or something. They try to say I’m whitewashed or some shit like that when really it’s not the case. I’ve seen someone say like, “white kids always have a different section to the black kids in Supreme videos”. Just let a nigga put on some fuckin’ clothes; it doesn’t really matter at all. Really wanna know why my pants are so high? My Grandpa told me gentlemen’s pants are never supposed to touch their shoes. That’s some black people shit. I’ve been running these; I’m not about to let other people fuck it up for me. It’s what I like to skate.

Sage Elsesser Interview

Who’s been skating hardest on the trip?

Probably Louis Lopez, He’s the best skateboarder ever. Tom Remillard’s always ripping too

Who’s been drinking hardest on the trip?

Think Benny got pretty smashed last night

Raemers?

Yeah he reeks of alcohol right now [Laughs].

Your boys Nakel and Kevin have just gone pro for FA. See yourself joining them any time soon?

Fuck, hopefully. I don’t know [laughs], shit!

Elliot: It’s long overdue! You just impossible grinded a table!

You got any passions of your own outside of skating?

Yeah I paint

You’ve recently finished school right? Have you made the decision to go to college or are you putting your faith in skating?

I’m going to college. I got a scholarship to Pratt in New York.

Well congratulations on that. You got any projects in the pipeline at the moment you can tell us about?

If my friend Logan leaves Malibu and skates then hopefully his video…That would be the sickest thing ever.

Finally, are there any other independent companies you’re backing at the moment?

Honestly fuck everything else if it’s not FA. That’s for real…

Supreme x Nike SB ‘GTS’

In a timely release, following the Wimbledon buzz of the last few weeks, Supreme lift the lid on their latest collaborative venture as they team up with Nike SB to rework the Nike GTS (Great Tennis Shoe).

The GTS was originally introduced back in 1993 as a tennis shoe from Nike’s Sportswear department, but was also promoted as an ‘off court’ shoe for the lifestyle market. Thanks to its low profile silhouette, flat chunky sole unit and accessible price point, the style was quickly adopted by skaters in the 90’s, including the likes of Guy Mariano, Pepe Martinez and Drake Jones. We haven’t seen much from the GTS over the last few years, which is surprising considering the resurgence of tennis shoe styles and the shoes rich skateboarding heritage, but in biding its time the GTS is back with a bang this season. As the collab kings have shown in the past, with the likes of the high top Vans Native American, they have a knack of bringing forgotten styles back into the limelight, and for me, this is one of their best efforts yet.

The no-frill GTS has been updated with a hard wearing, herringbone cotton canvas upper and arrives in a variety of bold colour options which include black, white, yellow, red and also a custom denim edition. Each shoe sits on a white vulcanised midsole with black piping detail, small swoosh branding on the side panels and gold embossed Supreme type on the heel. The design is kept simple, no groundbreaking technology or materials, but less is definitely more with these.

To celebrate the release, Supreme and regular collaborator William Strobeck have put together this short promo edit aptly named “Swoosh”, featuring riders Alex Olson, Kevin Bradley, Brian Anderson and Sean Pablo skating the shoes on the streets of  Paris.

The Supreme x Nike SB GTS will be available in-store at Supreme’s London location and online from Thursday July 16th.

Supreme x Vans Summer 2015 Old Skool Collection

Continuing their popular collaborative ventures, Supreme and Vans team up once again, this time giving the iconic Old Skool an updated rework for the Summer.

Despite both companies heritage lying in skateboarding, their latest iteration of the timeless Old Skool seems to focus on exploiting the shoes popularity in the lifestyle market, applying a perforated leather to the shoes upper for a premium look, although with the hard wearing leather I’m sure they skate well too. Arriving in four clean colour options, the shoes features additional leather detailing in the iconic sidestripe and tonal laces, all of which sits on top of a crisp white sole unit which is seperated with the classic black piping around the midsole.

The Supreme x Vans Summer 2015 Old Skool collection will be available at Supreme’s London location and online from the Thursday the 28th of May (Tomorrow).

Supreme x Stone Island Spring/Summer 2015

Having been the centre of a major leak scandal last week following its premature release on Stone Island’s German web store, we can now take a closer look at Supreme and Stone Island’s highly anticipated collaboration for Spring/Summer 2015.

Perhaps not the most obvious pairing but one that seemingly compliments each party none the less, the New York skate giants and Italian outerwear specialists have enjoyed some serious success off their previous collaborative ventures in the past, and this season sees the two come together once again on another concise offering that is sure to hit the same levels of demand. The collection utilises some of Stone Islands most coveted styles pulled directly from their archives, applying Supreme’s unique approach to design and combining the pairs knowledge in material application to offer several premium street ready pieces. This seasons effort is comprised of dual branded Metal 5C anorak’s and 6-panel hat’s offered up in two colour options of a custom all over paisley pattern and constructed from a water resistant iridescent nylon fabric. The collection is rounded off with three nautical inspired striped long-sleeves that arrive in black, red and green colour ways.

The Supreme x Stone Island Spring/Summer 2015 release is sure to become one of the seasons most sought after releases and if you want in on the action you will need to act fast. Continuing their fruitful relationship, skate giants Vans and Supreme link up once again to give another eye-catching rework to two iconic silhouettes – the Old Skool and Sk8-Mid.

The camouflage inspired reworks give a great representation of Supreme’s unique approach to their designs, always offering up something different to the norm. Each shoe features a black rich suede and canvas mix on the upper with 3 vibrant camouflage prints applied to the mid-foot panels. Plush leather lining and insoles add to the premium feel of the shoe, while contrasting white lacing and stitching complete the nostalgic, OG style.

Supreme present “the red devil.” by William Strobeck

Supreme and renowned video maker and long time collaborator William Strobeck return this Spring with another treat in the form of their latest video entitled “the red devil”.

The name is inspired by the fiery red hair of rider Aidan Mackey who features prominently in the video alongside other notable names including Sean Pablo, Anthony Van Engelen, Alex Olson, Sage Elsesser, Jason Dill, Tyshawn Jones, Kevin Bradley and Na-kel Smith, a strong line up to say the least. The video arrives on the back of their eagerly anticipated Spring/Summer 2015 release and further portrays the rebellious spirit of the New York powerhouse. As with Cherry and JOYRIDE, “the red devil” continues to take a focus on street skating, combining additional footage from Benny Maglinao with Strobeck’s recognisable style that has become synonymous with the brands aesthetic.

Supreme Spring/Summer 2015 Lookbook

Following news that the brands creative director Brendon Babenzien is set to leave to restart ‘Noah’, Supreme drop the visuals for their highly anticipated Spring/Summer 2015 release.

Once again, Supreme draw influence from a range of different themes including vintage sportswear, traditional Japanese designs and military styles for the latest release. The collection sees various prints and patterns applied to several unique, considered styles, with a strong selection of outerwear taking centre stage. There is also custom artwork from the likes of Daniel Johnston and stand out pieces such as the all over Malcolm X photo print Baseball Jersey; each of which represent the bolder items of the collection. Each piece offers up something completely different, and thats where Supreme excel. Amongst the bolder pieces there are more simplified items that utilise the brands iconic logo designs as well as new takes on the type.

Despite drawing from a number of subjects, Supreme always stays true to and representative of the NY skate scene. It’s ability to take inspiration from different cultures and turn it into some very New York is reflective of the city. Whether you are a fan of the clothing or not, it’s hard to deny that the brand continues to push the boundaries of design and style, season after season they continue to have people across the globe battling to get their hands on a piece.
